Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The buzz surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team might be designing a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it kicked off the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
